What to call about

Grouped in the order a Georgia year asks for them: the cooling months first, then the heat, then the things that matter all year.

Cooling

May – Sep, highs of 81–90°

Central air conditioning: the outdoor condenser, the indoor coil, and everything between them and the thermostat.

Signs it is time to call

  • Air from the vents is cool but not cold, or not cool at all
  • The system runs constantly and the house never reaches the set temperature
  • The outdoor unit hums but the fan does not spin
  • Ice on the refrigerant lines or the indoor coil
  • Water pooling around the indoor unit

Heating

Dec – Feb, lows of 35–39°

Furnaces and heat pumps, whatever is keeping the house warm through the cold months.

Signs it is time to call

  • Some rooms stay cold while others are fine
  • The system turns on and off every few minutes
  • A burning smell that does not fade after the first run of the season
  • New banging, rattling, or squealing when the heat kicks on
  • The heat runs but the air from the vents feels lukewarm

Airflow and thermostats

All year

The parts that move air around the house and tell the system when to run.

Signs it is time to call

  • Weak airflow from vents even with a clean filter
  • The thermostat reading does not match how the room feels
  • A blank or unresponsive thermostat
  • Noticeably more dust than usual, or musty air when the system runs

Seasonal checks

Mar – Apr and Oct – Nov

The between-season months are when a system is used least, which makes them the easiest time to have it looked at before it is needed every day.

Good times to schedule

  • Spring: before the first week of 80° highs, usually in May
  • Fall: before nights drop under 40°, usually in December
